Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your pages the source that AI engines quote when they answer a question: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot. It does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it, because engines pick their sources from the same indexes that rankings come from.

GEO vs SEO vs AEO: what actually changes?
Three names, one shift: search now has an answer layer above the links. SEO gets you into the index. GEO, also called answer engine optimization (AEO) or LLM SEO, decides whether the answer layer quotes you or a competitor. The work overlaps heavily, and the differences are about what gets weighted.

How do AI engines choose what to cite?
ChatGPT and Copilot pull from Bing
When ChatGPT or Copilot search the web, the candidates come from Bing's index. A page that Google ranks but Bing has not crawled is invisible to them. That is why submitting URLs through IndexNow or Bing Webmaster on every publish matters: it cuts the wait from weeks to hours, and why Bing performance deserves its own tracking even when Bing's direct traffic looks small.
Google AI Overviews extract, they do not read
AI Overviews favor pages a machine can parse cleanly: a direct answer up top, real headings, lists and tables in semantic HTML, and JSON-LD that matches the visible content. Copy your first paragraph onto a blank page. If it does not answer the question on its own, it will not be the answer Google shows either.
Perplexity rewards freshness and verifiability
Perplexity cites sources inline and leans toward recently updated pages whose claims check out against other sources. An honest visible "last updated" date matched to schema, and claims grounded in real data, are the difference between being the citation and being skipped.

Answer in the first paragraph
State the direct answer before any context. AI engines weight the top of the page heavily; a page that opens with throat-clearing rarely gets quoted.
Phrase headings as questions
"How much does X cost?" beats "Pricing considerations". Question headings match how AI answers get triggered and make each section quotable on its own.
Write one clean quotable span
Two or three sentences that stand alone as a complete answer. If a model can lift it without editing, it will.
Ship real FAQ with FAQPage schema
Answer the actual follow-up questions people ask, and mirror them in JSON-LD. FAQ is one of the most reliably extracted formats.
Keep a visible, honest update date
